AGARTALA, March 8 (TIWN): Along with the world, Tripura also celebrated the International Women’s Day on Tuesday.
With a theme ‘Planet 50:50 by 2030- step up for gender equality’ for the International Women’s Day Social Welfare and social Education Department on Tuesday organized a programme at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan.
Speaking about the initiatives taken for the women empowerment in the state, the dignitaries mentioned that there is women commission, women shelter home, working women home, girl child helping project, allowance for women, defence against domestic violence act and many others.
It is to be mentioned here that the day is celebrated as acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in various field. This day is observed to show respect to the women who has created history.
Besides, this day reflects the progress made to call for change and to encourage the women in the society.
However, the idea of the theme is to successfully achieve gender equality and to empower all the women and girls in the country. Besides, to ensure equal opportunity and education to all the women and girls in the society.
According to the reports, at first the International Women’s Day was observed as a popular event after 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace.
This International Women’s Day, it has been decided that initiatives will be taken to end all form of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere, to eliminate all forms of violence against the women and girls in the State including rape, trafficking, domestic violence and others.
Besides, initiatives will also be taken to end child marriages, killing girl child and others.
During the programme, Welfare of Scheduled Caste Minister Ratan Bhowmik has unfirled the programme, in the presence of Chairperson of Tripura Commission for Women Manika Datta and others.
