Bamboo plantation: Rampant chopping of bamboo plants may lead to extinction

AGARTALA, March 5 (TIWN): Despite of several initiatives taken to curb down the bamboo extinction in the state, people are continuously chopping down the bamboo plants. It is to be mentioned here that bamboo is in the edge of extinct. If proper initiatives are not taken to curb down the chopping of bamboo plants day by day the bamboo plants are going to extinct.Tripura has been known as the Bamboo hub but it seems like the lack of awareness among the people and initiatives may lead to extinction of bamboo plants. However, according to experts say bamboo can absorb around 25 per cent more carbon than other plantation crops, and can speedily combat global warming. Initiatives were being taken to bring the situation under control with bamboo plantation on the bank of Howrah River. The initiative taken to plant bamboo on the bank of the Howrah River is to control the soil erosion on the bank. It is worthy to mention that the Forest Department it taking initiatives to control the breaking down of embankment of the Howrah River but the problem of the river does not end here, the river is also facing threat of major water pollution and so far the river water is worsening day by day.

It is to be mentioned here that bamboo shoots are mostly used for making various dishes. Besides, people also crafts and makes monuments out of bamboo therefore bamboo are being chopped and utilized. Tripura is one of the major bamboo producing states in India. 

Bamboo grows all across the state of Tripura covering over nearly 10 to 15 different species. Muli Bamboo (Melocanna baccifera) is dominant specie with over 80% coverage.

Besides, bamboos are also used for incense stick and other domestic need which includes fencing, house and various other items. 

Species like Mritinga, Paura, Kanakaich, Dolu and Barak with differing properties and more amenable to higher value added products such as handicrafts, furniture and mats are grown in small pockets across the state.

However, proper initiatives must be taken to curb down chopping of bamboo plants. As the rampant chopping of bamboo plants may lead to extinction of bamboo plants.
