Udaipur Matabari rare Bostami turtles : ‘Forest Dept. planning to transfer few turtles form Kalyan Sagar to Kamakshya Temple’s lake’, Udaipur SDM talks to TIWN

UDAIPUR, March 5 (TIWN) : Months have gone when Forest Dept. had shifted the eggs of Bostami turtles from Kalyansagar lake, but there is no sign to bringing back the hatched baby tortoises into the lake of Matabari. Talking to TIWN correspondent, Udaipur SDM Subhashish Banarjee said that according to the Tripura High Court order, Govt has demolished all the concrete embankments surroundings the Kalyansagar Lake. But TIWN teams visit depicts a different picture because Udaipur Administration only demolished one end of the embankment out of four sides which may not be sufficient to provide natural habitat to N-Nigrican Bostami turtles. Administration’s shortfall of bringing back Matabari Kalyansagar back to its earlier cement free embankment is far from reality. ‘Already hatchery and boundaries are completed but when baby tortoises will be brought back in Kalyansagar is still unknown’, added SDM Banerjee. Due to lack of co-ordination between Forest Dept and District Administration, Bostami turtles still facing extinction in Kalyansagar lake.

Explaning the issue SDM also said, “Since last 500-600 years the tortoises which are living here, belong to same family, which is also a cause behind the extinction of Bostami turtles”. “The eggs which were taken away were very less in numbers, if left unprotected,  dogs and other animals would eat off eggs of tortoises”, he said.
“As already the number of turtles have been increased (?) here with the breaking down of artificial surrounding the Forest Dept. is further thinking to shift few tortoises from Kalyansagar Lake to the lake Kamkhya temple”, claimed SDM.
However, he added that the 110 meter hatchery and the natural slopes are completed almost and also the boundary wall. According to  SDM, the east side of the Kalyansagar lake will be the living-zone for turtles.
As per TIWN team’s observation, turtles are not humans that they will occupy the corners given to them for laying eggs, so this arrangement seems of no use of saving bostami turtles.
SDM also said, ‘now everything depends upon the Forest Dept. and how they will do with the turtles”. But most probably few of the turtles may be shifted to Kamkhya temple lake.
It’s to be mentioned here that the one of the most prominent tourist spots at Tripura’s Udaipur namely Mata Tripura Sundari temple has presently turned into a place for business and the natural environment has been destroyed by CPI-M Govt.

It was years back when Tripura Sundari Temple was filled with the surroundings of green grass and big trees. But Tripura’s  senseless Govt  destroyed the serene beauty of temple with stone, bricks & tiles. Presently, due to excessive heat nobody is able to walk on the tiles which are installed at Matabari in place of natural glass.

SDM also said, “More constructions are going on at Matabari premises after the High Court’s order to save the turtles”.

But, on spot assessment by TIWN team found a different story of planned destruction of Matabari’s eco-system and rapid extinction of Bostami turtles.
