BELONIA, Feb 21 (TIWN): International Mother Language Day observed at Sabroom on 21st February. To mark this occasion, several programmes were undertaken by Sabroom Nagar Panchayat and Sabroom Press Club to observe this day with proper honour and dignity.
MP Jiten Choudhury was the chief Guest in the program and MLA Rita Kar , SDM Sabroom Subash Saha were among dignitaries in the program.People - including children get together to observe international mother language day with a call to promote multi-cultural and multi-linguistic diversity all over the world with mutual respect and understanding.
MP Jiten in his speech said “Tripura had accommodated over 16 lakh people from Bangladesh during the liberation movement in 1971, the number which was more than the original population of the state. The objectives include sensitizing people about the use of mother tongue for the nation's development and also impart proficiency in their respective mother tongues. Celebrating these days help in imparting national togetherness, and promote oneness in the nation. Celebration of an International Mother Language day in schools is predicted to help children grow with the values of their nation and understanding essentials of Indian culture”.
“It is a matter of joy that people of both sides are coming closer and trade and commerce between the two countries have increased over the last few years” he said.
International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organisation (UNESCO )in November 1999. The date represents this day in 1952 when students in Dhaka, then in East Pakistan, demonstrating for recognition of their language Bangla as one of the two national languages of the country were shot and killed by the police. The day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
