TIWN

AGARTALA, Feb 18 (TIWN): Getting no conclusion out of the polit bureau meeting at Delhi, it seems that the central committee will now take decision on the tie-up issue. It is to be mentioned here that the 16-member CPM politburo today stood sharply divided over forging an alliance with the Congress for the Bengal Assembly polls and decided after a six-hour meeting to refer the matter to the central committee, refraining from making any concrete suggestions. CPM Central committee kicked off the three days emergency meeting on Tuesday to address the whole situation of the tie up issue at Delhi. The leaders of several states would discuss the matter over the resolution and recommendation sent by state committees. It is to be mentioned here that the tie-up issue of West Bengal pushed the entire Party into a jolt within the party. South lobby of CPM led by party hardliner Karat and ESR Pillai referred the decision of Party Congress and stood against any tie-up with Congress in anywhere. The final decision on the issue will be taken by the party's Central Committee on February 17-18.The clamour in Bengal unit of CPI (M) has grown over the past few weeks for a tactical electoral tie-up with the Congress.
However, the CPI (M) big heads felt that it was necessary to strengthen the party’s base in every state to remain relevant in national politics. The party’s Bengal unit has a soft spot for Congress. In 2008, the Bengal unit was totally opposed to Karat’s decision to withdraw support from UPA 1. In the past one month, CPI (M) state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra and politburo member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee have strongly advocated an alliance with the Congress.
