Left front candidate makes a clean sweep in the Amarpur bi-election, BJP successful in holding the second position, congress lagging behind

AGARTALA, Feb 16 (TIWN): As expected in absence of effective opposition, Left front candidate Parimal Debnath on Tuesday made a clean sweep in the Amarpur bi-election with the highest margin.Interestingly, left front never lost this seat since 1998 and is firmly gripping the position till date.CPI-M candidate Parimal Debnath got 20,355 votes while BJP candidate Ranjit Das secured 9,751 votes. Congress candidate Chanchal Dey stood at third position with less than 4,000 votes. As expected CPI-M candidate Parimal Debnath won the Amarpur by-elections by good margin. Debnath defeated the BJP candidate who stood in second position.However, CPIM candidate secured 20,355 votes, BJP with 9751, IPFT with 1623, Amrabangali 149, independent party 216 where as 262 votes were given to the account of NOTA. Seven candidates were in fray namely Parimal Debnath of CPI-M, Chanchal Dey from Congress, Ranjit Das from BJP, Pabitra Mohan Jamatia of IPFT, Bijoy Das from Amra Bangalee party, Nakshetra Jamatia from INPT and Ranajoy Jamatia of Twipra Land party. With the declaration of the results CPM supporters kicked off the celebrations in Amarpur. The counting began at 8 am on Tuesday at Amarpur Higher Secondary School.Left front made a clean swept against the rival Congress in these elections.

51 polling centres were set up for the bi-elections. However, among 51, eight centres were declared ‘sensitive.’ A total of 38,271 voters exercised their franchise in the elections. Among them 19,464 were male voters whereas, the rest 18,807 were females.

To ensure 100 percent vote cast special women polling stations was also set up this time at Amarpur. The main objective of opening all-women polling stations was to give chance to women folk for playing an important democratic role as per order of Election Commission.

The bi-election for the Amarpur Assembly segment was decided to hold after the CPI-M has kicked off its one MLA of Amarpur Assembly segment Manoranjan Acharjee on charge of Child rape recently.   

CPI-M legislator Manoranjan Acharjee has resigned from the Tripura assembly after the party expelled him on charges of wrongdoing.  Although, Acharjee has denied the charges slated against him.

It’s here mentioned that the by-election of Amarpur constituency was held on February 13. According to the state election officials more than 88 percent polling was registered. A total of 38,271 voters have exercised their franchise in the by-polls.
