First monthly Lok Adalat observed at Agartala : 3400 cases produced before the court

AGARTALA, Feb 13 (TIWN): Altogether 3400 cases of traffic chalan have been produced before the first monthly Lok Adalat on Saturday at District Court.

Reportedly, the first monthly one-day long lok adalat has initiated on Saturday from 10 am in the morning and will end by 3 pm in the evening.

Speaking at the programme it has been mentioned that District Secretary VP Debbarma said that a total of 1653 cases have been produced before the lok adalat.

Lok Adalat is a system of alternative dispute resolution developed in India. It roughly means "People's court".

India has had a long history of resolving disputes through the mediation of village elders. The system of Lok Adalats is based on the principles of the Panch Kameshwar of Gram Panchayats which were also proposed by Mahatma Gandhi the idea of Lok Adalat was mainly advocated by Justice P.N. Bhagwati, a former Chief Justice of India.

However, the lok adalat a non-adversarial system, whereby mock courts (called Lok Adalats) are held by the State Authority, District Authority, Supreme Court Legal Services Committee, High Court Legal Services Committee, or Talk Legal Services Committee.

It is to be mentioned here that Lok Adalat are periodically held for exercising such jurisdiction as they determine.

However, the lok adalat is usually presided over by retired judges, social activists, or other members of the legal profession.

However, the Lok Adalats can deal with all Civil Cases, Matrimonial Disputes, Land Disputes, Partition or Property Disputes, Labour Disputes etc., and compoundable criminal Cases.

It is to be mentioned here that the first Lok Adalat was held on March 14, 1982 in Gujarat.

However, Tripura got its permanent Lok Adalat in the year 2006 on May 15. As per the provision of section 22B of the Act, one at State Level at Agartala and one each at District Level at Udaipur, Kailashahar and Agartala.
