AGARTALA, Feb 2 (TIWN): Despite of several tall claims to initiate the Rs. 5, 000 crores worth of fertilizer plant at Khobal under Unakoti District of Tripura is yet left unutilized. It is to be mentioned here that the project has been taken up with a joint venture of Tripura Government, ONGC and private sector firm Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals. However, though the State Government, ONGC, Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals had signed a MoU on April 9, 2012 to set up the project which is one of the biggest initiatives taken in the state so far yet no progress has been observed on the project. It is to be mentioned here that Tripura Government has allotted 800 acres of land to set up a Rs. 5, 000 crore of Urea fertiliser plant in the State. However, allegation has been raised the project of the commencement of the Chambal Fertilizers and Chemicals is being delayed intentionally which has brewed resentment among the opposition party as well as the common people. The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), in association with Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited (CFCL) and the Tripura government took the initiative to set up the Rs.5, 000 crore plant in northern Tripura. However, the plant was supposed to be operational by 2016 by due to delay in the project the function of the plant is likely to face more delay.

After the allotment of the 800 acre for the plant till day no progress has been witnessed yet. Leaving behind a question that why there is so much delay in the commissioning of the 5000 crore fertilizer plant at North Tripura.

Earlier talking to ONGC Asset Manager V P Mahawar said that ONGC is exploring the possibility of more gas field in North Tripura before making commitment.

It is to be mentioned here that the State-owned ONGC had earlier signed MoU with a Rajasthan-based private company to set up a gas-based fertilizer plant in Tripura to meet the growing shortage of urea in the eastern and north-eastern states and adjoining Bangladesh.

However, the prolonged delay in the project leads to uncertainty with suffering for the farmers leaving behind question over the functioning of the State Government.
