AGARTALA, Jan 20 (TIWN): Uncertainty looms large over the once started Kailashahar aerodrome due to the lacklustre State Government. Located at Durgapur area under Kailashahar sub-division, the aerodrome now left in a deplorable condition due to the negligence of State Government and proper intervention. The airport established in the 60th century with small aircraft service now remains closed for many years due to lack of passengers. It is to be mentioned here that way back in the year 2011, Airport Authority of India had visited the Kailashahar airport with an aim to re-open it, however, after passage of years no up gradation is reported in the airport rather is has become a spot for the cattle’s to graze. According to the sources report, District Magistrate and Collector (DM) Mrinal Kanti Nath have sent a proposal to the state Transport Department in regard of the acquisition of 70 acres of land but so far no initiative has taken by the state government to re-open the airport at Kailashahar. However, the issue was raised many times to the State Government, but after passage of several years the State Government is least bothered about the development. If Kailashahar airport is made operational, Unakoti district will have direct connectivity with Kolkata, Guwahati, South Assam and many other parts of the North-eastern region.

The initiation of the Kailashahar Airport will reduce the pressure over the Agartala Airport and people residing in the nearby area will get benefit from it.

It has been learnt that the official had also sent a proposal with the department regarding acquisition of 70 acres of land for the up gradation work.

Besides, in the year 2014, the then DM of Unakoti Abhishek Chandra with his own initiatives started this project and 100 meter land had been identified on the side of this Airport, but then no progress till now has been done, and presently Kailshahar Airport has become a barren land.

Since May 1991 the airways service had been stopped totally. In the year 1993, before assembly election, during the then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao’s visit,  former MP Santosh Mohan raised the issue of  this Kailashahar Airport but no initiative ever seriously had taken for this airport.
