AGARTALA, Dec 16 (TIWN): Despite of several initiatives taken by the state government to make the fish farmers of the state self-reliant, most of the small and big fish markets of the state are yet dominated with the fishes of Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata and Bangladesh.

It is worthy to mention that with the initiatives of the Fishery Department of Jiraia Office altogether 35 fish farmers were provided with 1000 mixed fish lingers and fish foods.

Besides, in the current financial year five self-help groups of the area were provided with 3, 600 mixed fish lingers.

On the other hand, Champaknagar Fish Merger Samiti 1200 fish lingers for one Kani Pond and East Barjala Fish Merger Samiti of five Kani of pond were provided with 3, 500 fish lingers.

In view of the state government, the import of Rs. 100 crore fishes here in Tripura through Churaibari check post failed the state government to make the state self-reliant in fish farming and to meet the need of the population.

Despite of having numerous number of water bodies and getting sufficient help from the concern department for prolonged days yet the state paralyzed of producing local fish. Yet today the state fish markets are mostly dependent over imported fishes. Therefore, the state paralyzed over the production of fish and making the fish farmers self-reliant.

It is to be mentioned that in a programme, Minister Khagendra Jamatia on July 2 stated that on its ambitious plan the state Government has been taking several initiatives to make the state fish farmers self sufficient with production of 20 kg of fish per citizen of the state.

He also claimed that by 2017, the state fish farmer will be self sufficient which will decrease the import of fishes in the state.

However, where the Minister claims tall of making the state fish farmers self sufficient, on the other hand all the small and large market were been marked with the fishes of Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata including Bangladesh. It can be said that the fish markets runs only due to the imported fishes.

This situation raises question that if the state government has been taking so much effort to make the state fisher man self sufficient than why the market is dependent over the imported fishes.
