AGARATLA, Dec 13 (TIWN): The BJP on Saturday suffered a major blow in the Tripura municipal election with only 4 seats in Tripura out of 310 seats. The BJP has suffered a major shock with such a fall in the election result. It was billed as the mother of all electoral battles and the BJP lost it miserably. Now that the heat and dust of the month-long electioneering has settled down, it is time to ask the question 'why'. The scale of the defeat makes it obvious that they went horribly wrong on several counts, starting from strategy to reading the pulse of the people. It is to be mention here that BJP is failure to gain any seat among the 49 wards of AMC. However, to save the name they have managed to gain two seats Dharmamnagar and two in Kumarghat. Results of the Lok Sabha, gram panchayat and tribal autonomous district council polls have shown that the BJP's vote share has increased substantially, eating into Congress's support base. But, because of the division of votes among the BJP, the Congress and other non-Left parties, the CPI-M won the election.Although BJP claimed his party has fielded promising, educated and dedicated youngsters for the civic bodies' polls still could not reach to the people. The BJP has put up a record number of 28 women candidates in the Agartala Municipal Corporation, 13 municipal councils and six nagar panchayats. It is to be mentioned here that In a surprising move, the BJP's Tripura unit has earlier requested the main opposition Congress to form an electoral alliance to fight the ruling Left Front in the state's December 9 civic polls.

If the Congress would not have put up its candidates in next month's municipal elections, then the opposition parties' combined vote would have  been able to defeat the candidates of the Left parties," Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tripura unit president Sudhindra Dasgupta earlier told to TIWN.

Lack of trustworthy leadership, pro-people movement and weak organisational structure is making the BJP irrelevant in Tripura. Central leadership of the BJP must analyse the party's actual base in rural, semi-urban and urban areas.
