AGARTALA / KAILASHAHAR Nov 7 (TIWN): PCC chief Birajit Sinha was released from Kailsahar district jail on Friday after completing his sentence of one month of imprisonment announced by the Apex court in allegation of violation of administrative order. The Supreme Court’s division bench – Ranjan Gogoi and NV Ramana recently reduced the 3-month jail custody awarded to him by the Unakoti court earlier to 1 month for violation of the administrative order. Reportedly, Birajit had already spent 23 days in jail custody in 2004 after a complaint was lodged against him for violation of the administrative order and after spending rest of the 6 days in jail he was released from the jail custody on Friday. However, PCC chief Birajit Sinha was received outside the jail with a warm welcome by Advocate Pijush Kanti Biswas, MLA Gopal Roy, Badar-Ud-Jaman, Kailsahar district congress president and others at the premises of the jail. Thousands of party supporters remained present to welcome him.

The district congress also organised a massive rally with him which walked up to the Kaislahar District Bhawan and also organised a massive mass gathering in front of Kailsahar Congress Bhawan.

However, Birajit was convicted of violating administrative order by keeping extra bullets than required during the by-elections in Kailasahar in July, 2004. On that day, a clash occurred between the ruling and the opposition cadres which snatched two lives including one CPI(M) activist and personal guard of Birajit.

It is to be mentioned here that India’s one of the best criminal lawyers, former foreign Minister Salman Khurshid and K.V.Menon placed the case before the division bench of the Supreme Court on Monday before Justices Ranjan Gogoi and N.V.Raman for the final hearing of the case of the PCC president Birajit Sinha.

The final hearing of the case ended before the division bench of the Supreme Court on Monday but the verdict has been kept reserved and was declared on Tuesday announcing one month of imprisonment to Sinha.

Admitting the petition of the PCC chief Birajit Sinha, a division bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi and N.V.Raman of Supreme Court has sentenced him to one month of imprisonment at Unakoti district jail.

It is to be mentioned here that The Tripura High Court had upheld a lower court verdict of three months imprisonment to Tripura Congress chief Birajit Sinha in a 2004 case of violation of Indian Arms Act. A division bench of Chief Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Subhasish Talapatra asked Sinha to surrender before the court within one month from the date of pronouncement of the verdict. The court in its verdict in November 2013 acquitted Sinha of murder but ordered him to undergo three months imprisonment for violating Indian Arms Act. However, the Apex court rejected the verdict by the Tripura HC has sent him to one month of imprisonment to Sinha.
