Tripura greets Golden Girl Dipa Karmakar, students of various schools cheer on her arrival

AGARTALA, Nov 5 (TIWN): Tripura’s Golden Girl Dipa Karmakar landed here on Thursday. Young Indian Gymnast arrives in the state at around 9.40 am in the morning. Members of Several Sport Associations, Sports lovers, and admirers had gathered to receive the Golden Girl of Tripura at Agartala Airport. After a grand welcome at the Agartala Airport, a motorcade of two wheelers and vehicles were organized and went across the Capital as a part of the reception ceremony.Students of various schools were waiting at the roadside to have a glance of the Young Indian Gymnast. Besides, they have also felicitated Dipa with best wishes for her success.“I am very happy to be here on my native land and to see the excitement in the people. I shall try to deliver my best in the future attempts”, said Dipa Karmakar.Young Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar made history on October 25 becoming the first ever Indian to qualify for the finals of World Gymnastics Championships.American Simone Biles scored 15.633 to lead the eight-woman finalists list, with Karmakar qualifying 7th, ahead of Alexa Moreno of Mexico, who scored 14.899.

The 22-year-old Golden Girl from Agartala scored a total of 14.900 points in the women's Vault qualification at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow.

On the subsequent second vault, the Tsukahara 720, Dipa would twist alright but lose her way stepping out of the lane and be docked points immediately – a 0.3 penalty that would yield a lowly 14.066 (Difficulty 6.0), for an average of 14.683 and a fifth position in the world. It was 0.983 points off the gold, and 0.858 short of the bronze medal.

In 2014 Commonwealth Games, Karmakar won bronze medal in the same event, becoming the first Indian woman Gymnast to do so. This August, she also won bronze medal at the Hiroshima Asian Championships.

Dipa Karmakar has been given felicitation at Rabindra Bhawan on Thursday. During the programme, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar remained present while Sport Minister along with other members from several sports association was also present during the programme.
