AGARTALA, Oct 21 (TIWN): Following the traditional celebration of Kumari Puja, Ramakrishna Mission on Wednesday organized Kumari Puja on the occasion of Maha Ashtami.

This year, a 5-year 9-month and 2-day old girl has been worshiped. The puja started from 8.30am in the morning.

Kumari Puja was initiated by Swami Vivekananda himself in 1901. During that time nine girls were worshipped as Kumaris. The Kumari Puja was done by Swami Vivekananda himself. But by the time goes now only one girl is being worshipped.

The girl is usually selected from a family, which is associated with the RKM so that they have clear idea about the lineage of the girl.

Spiritually any girl who has not reached her puberty level or is incapable of procreation is considered as Kumari.

After the puja, the divinity of the goddess descends into the girl.

It looks for girls who are within five to seven years old for Kumari Puja. It is important that the girl should be Brahmin by birth and the parents have strong spiritual background.

The rituals began in the morning with Kumari Puja where the girls are worshipped as the goddess.

As per Hindu mythology, goddess Durga killed Chando and Mundo, two demons at the confluence (Sandhi) of Mahashtami and Mahanavami.
