Agartala, Sept 9 (TIWN): Chief Secretary Yashpal Singh on Wednesday talked to his Assam counterpart Vinod Kumar Pipersenia regarding deplorable condition of national highway, said a top official of PWD. Vinod Kumar was requested to undertake repair works to stop heavy traffic and made him aware about the problems being faced by the people due to poor road condition. Official sources said Singh requested the Assam Chief Secretary to undertake repair works on the national highway without delay
It is mentionable here that hundreds of vehicles stranded at Assam’s Lowerpoah area at the Assam-Agartala national highway. The conditions of 5 km road at Lowerpoah have deteriorated due to heavy monsoon since April. Other reason of poor condition NH 44 of Assam – Agartala part was poor maintenance work by Assam PWD.
The National Highway 44, has become a highway of woes for the hundreds of passengers and drivers of the vehicles who have to take to this vital connectivity for their movement as it links Tripura with rest of the country.
Due to the ever worsening condition of the road, there has been unprecedented traffic jam for the last one week. The situation has become so that both sides, large queues of vehicles, passengers and goods, have been stranded as only one vehicle is allowed to pass through it.
According to some stranded passengers and drivers, it has been simply unbearable to wait for hours, particularly during the night that too in the shivering cold. The trouble is compounded by the fact that the affected zone is in the hilly areas without any amenity or facility to stay and have food or even water to drink.
