Paid private tuition: District level committee constituted for implementation of court order

Agartala, September 9 (TIWN): The state government will crack the whip soon on those teachers’s who are still carrying on their paid private tuition. The High Court of Tripura, in a judgement has banned paid private tuition. Earlier on several occasion, the education department tried several times to stop it by issuing infinite numbers of notifications. Every time the no heed was paid to the notifications.

According to department sources, education minister directed   to implement the high court directive with iron fist. Committees will be constituted at all eight district, they will monitor the activities of teachers.  The team will give regular feedback to the department regarding the implementation of high court order.

The department will collect the name of teachers imparting paid tuition from school heads and school inspectors. Instruction will be conveyed to all district education officers for implementing the court order strictly and maintain transparency. Reports says after the judgement, some teachers the capital gave up practicing paid tuition. However, teachers in sub urban areas across the state yet to give up the practice.  

The high court  has ordered a total  ban on private tuition by teachers of government schools and colleges in the state.  The court, however, imposed some restrictions on tuitions given by private school teachers. It said even if they are allowed to do so, they can only impart tuitions to students from other schools. In case of government schools, if additional tuitions become necessary, the teachers will take extra classes beyond school hours and school authorities will manage their compensation, the bench ruled. Expressing concern over the rampant practice of tuitions by school and college teachers, the high court has asked the state government to ensure the compliance of the government's orders banning private tuitions.

Based on a letter of a poor guardian, Justice Gupta took suo moto cognizance against a section of school and college teachers and said private tuition, at least up to Class VIII, is completely against the spirit of the Right to Education (RTE) Act. Besides, the bench issued separate notices to the principals of 16 private schools asking them to file affidavits mentioning their stand on the issue. The private school authorities have opposed the practice and assured the court that they will not allow private tuitions.
