AGARTALA, August 23 (TIWN): The Tripura government has demanded for garment manufacturing units in every sub-divisions of the state in view of getting the sector flourished like other states and countries like Bangladesh. The move has come up in view of the hefty turnover yearly in this sector, said state industry minister Tapan Chakroborty.

“For enhancing productivity in state’s garment sector the government of Tripura had demanded the centre to set up textile manufacturing units in the state’s sub-division to reach the rural artisans and learners,” Chakroborty told media persons on Saturday after meeting with the Union Ministry on August 20 at Delhi.

He said, “There is a high demand of garment sector in Tripura as there are available artisans to work in this sector who often goes abroad in search of work.”

The textile industry had flourished in neighbouring Bangladesh and they now have an annual turnover of around Rs. 3 lakhs crore, Chakroborty said.

Besides, on the sideline of another issue Chakroborty pointed out that there is also a need to flourish the sericulture sector in Tripura by the help of which the number of trustees of the state can be increased.

“We had taken up the issues with the government of India during the meeting on August 20,” adding Chakroborty said it is assumed that the centre is optimistic in this regard and would extend the helping hand towards flourishing the sectors in the land-locked state of Tripura.

It may be recalled here that Union Minister for Textiles Santosh Kumar Gangwar on May 20 this year laid foundation for Apparel and Garment Unit and Silk Printing Unit, first of its kind to be set up in the Left ruled Tripura in presence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
