AGARTALA, August 23 (TIWN): A sub-inspector of police has been placed under suspension for alleged dereliction of duty in registering an FIR in an assault case involving a university girl

“Sub Inspector (SI) Paromita Saha, attached to West Tripura women police station was suspended today evening  by the police department pending inquiry against her for dereliction of duty," a police department spokesperson said.

A Tripura University student came to Agartala Women Police Station on Friday to register a molestation complaint against an auto-rickshaw driver. But Paromita Saha, who was in-charge  did not lodge any complaint, rather advised her not register any case against the errant auto driver.

After a long conversation, an FIR was lodged under Section 354/509/323 of Indian Penal Code.
The varsity student namely, Meenakshi Debnath was allegedly physically abused by an auto-driver during an argument over extra fare at Nagerjala under Battala Police Outpost yesterday.
Meenakshi boarded the autorickshaw with the number TR01-A-2538 from Panchabati area under Nutan Nagar for her university at Suryamninagar via Nagerjala.
When asked, Meenakshi said that the auto driver charged her Rs. 15 though the actual fare was Rs. 13. However, she agreed to pay extra Rs. 2 and asked for a change of Rs. 5 from him. But the driver refused to give the change saying that he did not have any. When the girl asked him again, he engaged in an argument and reportedly attempted to slap her in public.
During the argument, the driver reportedly assaulted her physically. The Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress also gheraoed Agartala Women Police Station raising voices against the inactive role of police citing the example where they have not taken FIR in a cognizable offence.
