Flood situation in South Tripura turned grim : Continuous rain hampers normal life in Belonia: Farmers becomes worst affected

Belonia,, August 21 (TIWN):Flood situation in South Tripura turned grim on Friday due to heavy rainfall with 72 people taking shelter in relief camps in West Paikhola GP even as the MeT department forecast more heavy rains in the next two days.“So far a relief camps have been set up that are sheltering 17 Nos Families affected people and a medical camps have been opened,” according to District Official .

No death reported so far .ADM South ,BDO BC Nangar ,SDM Belonia move to the spot to see the flood situation. They said that so far 55 houses have been damaged, few domestic animals died and crop was lost in over 2.10 lakh hectares of land due to the floods. More over relief arrangements had been provided for the affected people.

Continuous incessant rains coupled with thunderstorm over past two days affects normal life and caused damage to properties in several places of Belonia. Electricity disrupted and most of the electric poles, trees fell down like small creatures. However, Metrological Department informs that the situation will continue for the next couple of days also.

Incessant rain threw normal life out of gear here at Belonia. Neighbouring areas  of Belonia were pounded by heavy showers right through the day since morning, inundating several low-lying areas and arterial roads. The inadequacies of the drainage system stood exposed as sewage from open drains mixed with rain water in several areas.

Residents in the flood-prone areas of the city grew anxious following the continuous downpour and the prospect of further rains, which usually results in a flood-like situation. But Public Works Department officials allayed fears on the possibility of any inundation.

Normal life and business have been affected. Trees uprooted, crops damaged and power supply stooped in several localities as feeders and transformers damaged. More then 36 Electric Polls were washed away near Muhuri River Bank area at Maichara,Manurmukh,Bankar Ghat,Kaladepha,Ramnagar,Sashan Ghat area. Five Transformers also damaged at Tiprabazar, Kharagapara, Dhan Chandra Para, Jirlati, Joyhari Para.  

State government has put districts’ administration on alert to keep an eye on the situation and initiate relief operations.

But the major affect is for the farmers. Most of the crops get spoiled due to this heavy rain. Various agricultural lands have taken the shape of water body.Widespread monsoon have cast a negative impact on crops and have affected the yield of various food crops in various areas. However, heavier monsoon caused field floods in lower areas and resulted in more damage.
