Stolen ATM machine recovered from Howrah river, 4 arrested 2 absconding

AGARTALA, August 20 (TIWN): Yet in another major blow the A.D. Nagar police on Thursday morning recovered the stolen Automated Teller Machine (ATM) from the Howrah River under west Tripura in Ranir Bazar Ghoramara area which was allegedly stolen by the robbers on Tuesday late night. Four dive men with the help of crane picked up the ATM machine from the river. According to police, the ATM was lifted from Beltali area under A.D.Nagar police station on Tuesday midnight. However, 4 miscreants are being arrested in this connection so far and 2 are yet absconding. After conducting continuous raids in different areas police on Thursday morning recovered the ATM machine from Howrah River. Sources claim that the ATM is being recovered from Howrah river at Ranirbazar Ghoramara area. Panic gripped the area when on Wednesday morning the localites spotted that the ATM counter was opened and the ATM was missing from the counter and immediately informed the police.It is to be mentioned here that getting alarm police rushed to the spot with dog spot and conducted an investigation. As a part of the investigation the major exit points were all put on a high alert to nab the miscreants.In a daring heist the hi-tech robbers looted one ATM machine of State Bank of India (SBI) on Tuesday night from Agartala Arundhutinagar Beltoli area under A.D.Nagar police station.4 have been detained in connection to the incident, police said. According to the police, the robbers came in van bearing number AS6928 and thronged into the ATM counter.

The arrested are identified as Shahjahan Ali (23) of Assam Dabari area, Ajnor Ali (32) of Haju in Kamrup district, and Ranjan Das (18) of Udaipur Agricultural office.

Apart from the three, police also detained one Amar Rudra Paul of A.D.Nagar (Paulpara) along with a vehicle who is yet to be interrogated.

Police confirmed that the thieves came from Assam from a van bearing number AS6928. Two others are yet absconding, claimed police.

The ATM counter is located just adjacent to the AD Nagar police station and still the robber’s managed to flee with the entire ATM machine. According to the police the incident took place on Tuesday midnight. The looters managed to lift the ATM machine from Beltoli ATM counter. The ATM belongs to the SBI, said police.

Asked about development of the case, police said the AD Nagar police team is conducting raid in different areas to trace out the absconding miscreants of the gang.

As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guideline, it is a mandatory for all banks to provide a security guard, CCTV camera and trigger alarms at all ATMs. However, most of the ATMs don’t have a security guard and CCTV cameras.

Most of the time it has been noted that the cameras which has been installed in the ATM booths remains non-functional or damaged, said the locals.

However, police is further investigating the case and said that they don’t have any more details to disclose as the culprits are not yet interrogated thoroughly.
