AGARTALA, August 14 (TIWN): Governor Tathagata Roy on Friday urged the media to maintain accuracy in the display of news items to ensure smooth and quick run of the state, during a discussion session at Vivekananda Bhavan, confirmed an official on Friday.
The discussion session was held on the topic ‘Democratic India and Media’. The programme was organized with the initiatives of the North District Press Club. Addressing the discussion session, Governor stated that democracy depends on media independency. Similarly, media is also dependent on democratic society.
During the programme, Deputy Speaker of State Assembly Pabitra Kar focused on the development of the democratic media. He also mentioned that the important role played by the media for the welfare of the people and to create awareness among the public of the state.
The media require us to learn and use critical thinking skills. The media help us to understand the workings of our immediate world, and our individual places in it.
Additionally, the media system itself should be democratic in its own construction shying away from private ownership or intense regulation. Media democracy entails that media should be used to promote democracy.
MLA Biswabondhu Sen said that the media is independent because the democracy exists in the country.
However, senior journalist Jayanta Bhattacharjee discussed about the history of media and other important issues of media.
During the programme, Gandha Singh Rupini of Damcherra Block and Milan Kanti Datta of Panisagar sub-division were given dignity hour at the programme.
