AGARTALA, Aug 11 (TIWN/IANS): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Tuesday said government departments would be asked to issue necessary documents and certificates related to the ongoing process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

Sarkar said in the assembly that the required documents would be provided to people for updating the NRC, when the issue was taken up for discussion. 

The NRC issue in the neighbouring state of Assam has hit Left-ruled Tripura of late. It was debated in the assembly on Monday as a large number of Tripura residents have shifted to Assam for numerous reasons including jobs, marriage and business.

Opposition Congress legislator Biswabandhu Sen raised the issue in the assembly and apprised the house that former citizens of Tripura, who are now settled in Assam, are facing severe problems in getting documents about their previous residency from various Tripura government departments.

Sen hails from Dharmanagar, adjacent to Karimganj district of Assam.

Responding to the issue, the chief minister said there are certain flaws in the ongoing process of updating the NRC in Assam.

"(Tripura) government will ask all the concerned departments and authorities to issue necessary documents and certificates promptly to those who require these papers for ongoing process of updating the NRC in Assam. Why would we create delay in issuing the documents," Sarkar, who also holds the home portfolio, told the house.

He also announced that if any one faces any problem in getting the requisite government papers, they can meet him personally.

The Assam government, on the direction of the Supreme Court and under the supervision of the Registrar-General of India, has started the process of updating the NRC and completing the work by December 2015.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi recently said that he would write to the central government to include all the people whose names figure in the latest voter list in the NRC.

The All Assam Students Union, which led the anti-foreigners' movement, wants March 24, 1971 as the cut-off date for deportation of illegal Bangladeshi citizens.
