Tripura Left front govt. gets nod from assembly to set up separate state university

AGARTALA, August 11 (TIWN): Finally the state Left front government had got the nod from the state legislative assembly to set up the proposed separate state university in Agartala in view of getting the state educational infrastructure expand. The ongoing monsoon assembly session on Monday passed the pending bill of the state university. “Our main aim for setting up separate state university is to expand the state educational infrastructure and also to ease the work of existing central university,” said State Higher Education Minister Tapan Chakroborty on Monday.Talking to the reporters on Monday evening Chakroborty said that to achieve a long term pending goal of the state government, the bill of separate state university was passed on Monday at the assembly after several examination of the bill by a select committee comprising legislators.

He said, “From the year 2007 till 2015 the education in terms of quality has been expanding in the state and as part of it the separate state university would be opened also with an aim to ease the work of existing central university.”

Adding to that Chakroborty told reporters at the civil secretariat on Monday, “The state cabinet had decided to open the state university in the name of erstwhile Tripura king Maharaja Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, who had set up the state's first degree college in Agartala in 1947.”

He also said that the university would be set up in the MBB College campus and all are almost readied. “The state government would be now fully engaged to complete the rest of the works comprising of getting ready the academic block and others.”

“If everything falls on the right track than we are planning to start the academic session of the state university from the next academic year,” Chakroborty said adding, “There has been several demands from several fields to open the state university, following which the state Left front government had decided to open the same.”

He said as per the provision in the central act after getting a prior approval from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the state government if required can take the degree colleges which are currently central university.

“The state government had so far spend Rs. 45 crore for the construction work of the state university. The entire fund will be spend from the consolidated fund of the state government,” said Chakroborty.

Asked about the recruitment policy of the administrative staffs, Minister said, “The state government would own the policy which the other states follow whereas the search committee would also be formed by the state government to appoint the vice chancellor for the university.”

He also said that some new courses would be introduced in the university syllabus to go at par with the expansion of the education system in the state.

The proposed university would ease the pressure of the Tripura (Central) University, and also help to boost excellence in higher education, the minister said. Tripura presently has 22 degree colleges, two medical colleges, and 15 other professional and technical colleges with around 16,000 students annually enrolled in various colleges.
