AGARTALA, August 2 (TIWN): Having worked together to facilitate trouble-free movement of before the stipulated date of November 30, 2015 the India and Bangladesh government had kicked off the land swap programme from Friday mid-night with the Northeastern states of Tripura Muhurichar under Belonia sub-division all set to get merge with the Bangladesh territory.

As per the agreement the disputed Chandan Nagar village under the Dhalai district of Tripura would join with the Indian territory whereas Muhri Char of Belonia under South District of Tripura would merge with the Bangladesh territory.

Between July 31, 2015 and June 30, 2016, the entire process including physical exchange of enclaves and land parcels in adverse possession along with boundary demarcation — is expected to be completed.

Tripura would gain from the land boundary agreement that was passed in the Lok Sabha recently because this would solve the land dispute especially at Moharichar in South Tripura district and an enclave at Kamalpur in Dhalai district.

Tripura Govt. has been demanding to resolve the Moharichar and Charnagar land dispute problems since for the long time, but earlier only the Charnagar dispute was solved leaving the other in droop.

Altogether 14,856 residents of these enclaves became Indian citizens, putting an end to an agony that started in 1947 with the Partition. On Friday midnight, India transferred 17,158 acres to Bangladesh, and in turn received 7,110 acres.

Ending decades of wait, India and Bangladesh are set to start implementing their landmark Land Boundary Agreement full-fledged fromSaturday and would continue till November 30, 2015.

The Centre has already sanctioned a Rs 3,048 crore-package for rehabilitation of the people affected by the exchange of enclaves under the LBA implementation.

Other steps with regard to implementation of the 1974 Land Boundary Agreement and 2011 Protocol are underway in accordance with agreed modalities between governments of India and Bangladesh.

According to an estimate, around 37,000 people are living in Indian enclaves in Bangladesh while 14,000 people are staying in Bangladeshi enclaves in India.
