AGARTALA, June 29 (TIWN): The deplorable condition of National Highway 44 continues. The only road connectivity that links mainland India with the eastern part of Meghalaya, Barak Valley in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura has for a long time now remained in a harrowing experience for helpless commuters. Due to the critical condition of the road following incessant rain, no commodity truck has arrived in the Churaibari check post on Sunday. All though the passengers’ vehicles have somehow taken the risk to travel on this Jumpy-bumpy road, but no commodity truck arrived here in at Churaibari check post.

Following the incessant rain from Friday, Kashiapunji and Hatai area has turned out to be in a poor condition. Hundreds of commodity loaded trucks have been stopped at different areas of National Highway due to this pathetic condition. Maximum of the commodity loaded trucks are carrying vegetables, fishes and fruits which may be destroyed if not reached to the cold storage on time.

Sources claim that even in such critical condition no initiative is being taken by the concerned department for immediate development of the condition.

A vast number of commuters and drivers of the vehicles including night supers and goods carrying trucks are facing several problems due to poor condition of National Highway NH-44. The present road turned from its original shape to muddy and is flooded with water as incessant rainfall has clogged the roads resulting traffic jams and irregularities of transpiration. Unfortunately, commuters have no option but to travel through this long stretch of jumping road full of potholes and boulders, at times risking their own lives, while on other occasions, putting their lives and safety in the hands of the driver.

Allegedly, the condition of the NH-44 is worsening day-by-day due to negligence of PWD and the agencies assigned by the department. The condition of the NH- 44 is in such a bad shape in some spots, it could be snapped at anytime, the source added.

Even after few days of constructions done by the private contractors, the roads started to damage which is nothing a new topic. The other problems faced by the road are; bad riding quality, poor geometrics, and insufficient pavement thickness. Apart from being narrow they are also highly congested.

Here people are demanding for the reconstruction of this road but the authorities are giving a blind eye over this issue. Although some passenger vehicles have travelled on the NH-44 but not a single commodity loaded truck has arrived at the Churaibari  Check post.
