AGARTALA, June 26 (TIWN): Pushed by the devastating malaria outbreak in the previous year which claimed hundreds of life, the state health department was found on a spree this year arranging several awareness camps across the state. The departmental workers were engaged to spray dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in the malaria hit zones including Tripura’s capital.
According to the official of the state health department this year the department had taken certain initiatives to combat the malaria epidemic. The official said that this time they would take no chance of spreading malaria and other water borne diseases here at the state including capital city.
Tripura health department organised an awareness camp in association with some NGOs and others stakeholders to help combat monsoon related diseases like malaria and diarrhea and other vector borne diseases.
Recently a meeting was held at Agartala chaired by the state health Minister Badal Chowdhury with an aim to review the preparedness of the department and taking a stock of the ground situation. During the last financial year more than hundreds of people, most of them tribal children and senior citizens, died in Tripura due to malaria and vector borne diseases.
Besides, the Tripura High Court recently on its interim order seeks government intervention of the death of malaria last year. The court on Monday expressing displeasure over the death of at least 96 due to malaria epidemic here at the state as stated by the state government had asked the state health and family welfare department to table a report to HC on its intervention on malaria death by June 29.
