KAMALPUR, June 23 (TIWN): The devastating grip of Tir gambling continued at full swing at Kamalpur. Even though the leftist students’ union gave deputation to police regarding the matter on 13th May last, it bore no fruit even after two months.

The numerical gambling named Tir controlled from Shillong with a tempting opportunity of availing 80 rupees per 1 rupee gripped the sub-division for last four to five years. Dashamighat, Baligaon, Marachara at the sub divisional headquarter of Kamalpur, Halhali, Shantirbazar, Salema, Durgachowmuhani-almost all the main market areas came under the grip of this gambling.

Further, different rural areas adjacent to those places also became the den of that gambling. Students, youths, employees, day-laborers and even housewives got addicted to that gambling. And the bookies who locally book the numbers for the customers became wealthy enough in short period of time.

Police knew all the facts very well. Even the lists of the dealers of different areas got with the police. But mysteriously, police never showed any tendency to curb the gambling. Speculations became strong that police remained reluctant due to some profitable nexus with the dealers and bookies.

Regarding the increasing tendency of gambling, the leftist students’ union SFI gave deputation to Kamalpur police station on 13th May last. But yet police showed no tendency to curb the gambling.

Commoners became stunned as what made the police so reluctant to let with the gambling.
