AGARTALA, June 11 (TIWN): The surprise visit of the Medical Council of India (MCI) team here at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has brought a tough time for the concerned authorities and as a result the uncertainty hovers over the accreditation of MBBS degree at the college. The team conducted a sudden visit to the AGMC without any imitation on June 9, said official source of the AGMC.
According to the information provided by the AGMC source, after every five years the MCI conducts a surprise visit to take a stock of the situation of the college run by the government here. As part of this, the team on Wednesday visited the AGMC.
Sudden visit of AGMC has given rise to such circumstances as this shall determine the future of the continuation of the official recognition of the MBBS degree in AGMC, which is one of the two most renowned medical colleges of Tripura.
The AGMC authorities are facing a tough time in offering an explanation to the visiting MCI team, owing to the poor utilization of funds sanctioned by the center.
Interestingly, on Wednesday, the concerned authorities were not aware of the visit of the MCI team as they had arrived here without any intimation. In the meantime the team managed to gather information and reports of the medical college as how it is being run and what is its current status.
Besides the team arriving here at the college instructed some of the Professors to come here from Kolkata by hook and crook. Most of the AGMC Professors were used to be remain absent despite drawing a hefty sum per month.
Even some Tripura Health Service officers were ordered to be presented before MCI officials pretending as AGMC faculties.
The overall haphazard situation of AGMC has left skepticism about the security of the medical college’s MBBS students’ future as the MCI officials have this time come for an inspection without any imitation.
The MCI team visits Agartala after every 3 months to conduct an inquiry about the AGMC but the team which arrived here on June 9 was a part of their surprise visit which they do after every 5 years. But the visit without intimation has of course left a section of officials in dilemma.
