AGARTALA, June 11 (TIWN): Heavy rainfall across Agartala city and suburban areas has hit the normal life on Thursday morning. After a dry spell of over a month, the monsoon finally made its presence felt in the state, though the capital city’s life is disrupted as the road and transport services are deranged due to heavy rain.
Incessant rain, since morning, has thrown life out of gear in parts of Agartala, disrupting road traffic and causing damages to paddy crop in some suburb areas also.
Though delayed by couple of days, the heavy rain has finally provided sigh of relief to the people from the extended summer in Agartala.
Office goers and school goers had to deal with traffic jams and diversions on several routes as the regular route was logged with water. The rain also affected public transport of suburban areas.
Several businesses shopping centers were closed, while some were threatened by rain water.
Since morning, several areas of Agartala city including; Shivnagar, Kalyani, Indranagar, Pratapgarh, RMS Chowmuhani, Mantri-Bari Road, Motorstand along with various other parts experienced water-logging. The water logged in some places of the roads created problems for vehicles and pedestrians.
Traffic came to a halt or crawled on some sections of Motorstand road as water has simply disrupted the regular movement of the traffic on the roads.
Due to heavy shower, life in the adjacent part of the city has also come to a halt. Water has entered in various residential areas of Agartala city. Flood like situation has occurred on the roads.
The continuous spells of rain exposed the so called state government’s tall claims of cleaned drainage system for the smooth flow of water. The sewerage system of the city was choked and the water was accumulated at various places due to blockage of small drains passing through the city.
This terrible condition of water logging on the roads is mainly due to the improper disposal of garbage which is not properly disposed and enters into drainage systems and clogs the drains. Further, it obstructs the free flow of the water that enters into these drains, causing water to back up during rainfall, flooding the surrounding area.
