BELONIA, June 7 (TIWN): Resentment brewed up among the locals of Srinagar border area and police personnel of Srinagar outpost on Saturday late night when the local people 'gheraod' (encircled) two vehicles full of Phensedyl and Foreign liquor, which was allegedly accompanied by the police of Srinagar Out post.

Reportedly, on Saturday late night when the smugglers were smuggling the contraband items from Srinagar to Bangladesh through border area illegally, suspicion grew among the locals and they stopped the vehicle on the middle of the road and demanded to check the items which they were carrying in the vehicle.

Talking to TWIN reporter the local residents said, when they asked for checking the items in the vehicle, clash of words broke out between the police personnel and the locals. Taking the advantage of the clash between the police and public, the drivers carrying Phensedyl and Foreign liquor flew from the spot but fortunately they could not smuggle the items to Bangladesh.

It is also alleged by the localities, that the police personnel claimed that the vehicle was carrying food and other goods for BSF 60th battalion deployed in the border area, but as per rules goods for BSF can be only carried through the officially assigned vehicles and not with any other vehicle without number plate.

There is also serious allegation against the BSF 60th battalion targeting their involvement in the smuggling of contraband items through the border as the vehicles are being passed openly under their eyes.

However, the localities claimed that Smuggling of Phensedyl a cough syrup with an exceedingly high dose of codeine, high dose of painkillers with drugs and other contraband items are increasing day by day in the border area. The police, administration and BSF are directly involved in the smuggling of these contraband items as the smuggler gangs are working hand in glove with ruling party and corrupt Government official’s alleged localities.

The localities further said that Consumption of alcohol is banned in Muslim majority Bangladesh and thus the demand of alternative means like cough syrup is on the rise in the neighboring country. Numerous smugglers from both sides of border are engaged in illegal trade of Phensedyl and foreign liquor as it gives them huge incomes.

After huge clash of words between the public and police the situation was brought under control somehow but the locals has expressed their anger against the police as well as the BSF personnel and openly alleged that police and BSF personnel are directly involved in smuggling of contraband items.
