AGARTALA, June 5 (TIWN): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar was left out from the list of dignitaries to witness the Modi-Hasina joint flagging off event of the Kolkata- Dhaka- Agartala bus service tomorrow in Dhaka. The chief minister of the only left ruled state of the country was not invited to witness the event reportedly at the behest of West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Supremo Mamata Banerjee. The resolution of the 41-year-old land boundary problem between India and Bangladesh is seen as a landmark achievement of the Modi Government. Modi’s submission to Mamata’s demand was in line with his effort to pacify Mamta Banerjee to sign the Teesta water sharing deal alongwith Bangladesh feel the political analyst here. Though the resolution of the 41 year long dispute was connected to Assam, Tripura and West Bengal, the chief minister of only West Bengal was invited to attend the historic event of exchange of the instrument ratifying the Land Boundary Agreement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit is being seen as historical, as it comes soon after the resoluion of a 41-year-old land boundary problem that had confined over 50,000 people as stateless inhabitants in enclaves on both sides of the border.Bangladesh was getting 500 MW electricity from India and the country is working on to get 600 MW more. Modi will end his visit on Sunday evening after a public speech before a big audience comprising politicians to teachers and students.
But the much-awaited Teesta water-sharing deal would remain pending even this time, as the charismatic Modi has failed to convince his West Bengal state Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to endorse the agreement.According to informations received here, Modi will be accorded state honour soon as he lands at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 10:30am on Saturday.
At least 20 instruments ranging from security cooperation to people-to-people contacts would be signed during his 36-hour whirlwind visit that is believed to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between the two countries.
Modi also had said that his visit would focus on people-to-people contacts and connectivity.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ceremoniously flagged off the Kolkata –Agartala bus service via Dhaka on Thursday.
The cross border bus service was signed off recently by Indian Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkadi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Obaidul Quader in New Delhi. The bus service will facilitate the visit of the Tripura people to Indian mainland as the route is nearly 1000 km shorter than the existing Agartala Kolkata journey via Assam.
The trial run of the Kolkata-Dhaka- Agartala and Agartla-Dhaka-Kolkata bus service has already been accomplished and the normal bus service will be ceremoniously flagged off jointly by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Seikh Hasina tomorrow in Dhaka.
