AGARTALA, May 29 (TIWN): Run by North East Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO), government undertaking gas based power plant at Monarchak at Tripura Sonamura Sub division is currently facing a loss with its power production as the State Govt run Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) is reluctant to buy power from the plant due to high power cost as compared to other power plants in Tripura.Talking to TIWN on Thursday, a highly placed source of Monarchak power plant said that the state govt. has refused to buy power from gas based power plant at Monarchak as the power cost of the plant is comparatively high than Palatana power plant.Asked about the power cost of Monarchak power plant, the official said that at present the cost is Rs. 4 per unit of power. Adding to that he said the only reason behind not buying power from Monarchak is because of high power cost. The official said on Thursday a meeting was held at New Delhi between the Union Minister of power and NEEPCO Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) P C Pankaj. TSECL CMD S K Ray had also attended the meeting on Thursday.

The meeting was called by the union minister to take up the issue of power crisis here in Tripura. However though the meeting ended on Thursday but it is expected that the meeting would bring a fruitful solution to the problem with TSECL as they are reluctant to buy power from the plant, said official.

The NEEPCO Monarchak Power plant is currently generating 20 to 40 MW of power depending on the demand by the consumers.

The real entity for the state yet today facing power crisis has come to limelight with the TSECL is also allegedly reluctant to buy additional power from the Palatana power plant, as a result power shortage has hit the state in summer's peak season. According to the highly placed source of the power department TSECL some way or other refused to buy power from the plant more than 70 MW.

However, to restrict any kind of loss to the ambitious project the Palatana Power plant is currently not taking any heavy load to the turbines of both Unit – I and unit – II, said the source. Here it may be noted that TSECL had inked power purchase agreement with both OTPC and NEEPCO to buy allocated power but this has now turned bleak with power shortage here.
