Tripura Power Employees Union organizes Marriage Registration Camp

AGARTALA, May 9 (TIWN): In a special drive by the Tripura Power Employees Union, Sub-Division No-1, Collegetilla Local Committee on Saturday had organized marriage registration camp at Entertainment Hall of Electricity Corporation. Nearly 155 couples had registered their marriage as valid one. Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation, Dr. Prafullajit Sinha had inaugurated the camp.

The dignitaries present in the meeting were Chairman cum Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL), Shyamal Kumar Roy, Technical Director of TSECL, Mridul Kanti Chowdhury, SDM, Sadar, Maniklal Das and the General Secretary of the Employees Union, Shanti Debnath.

Highlighting the importance of marriage registration, MLA Ratan das told “that the marriage registration certificates empower women and give them security in life and organizing these camps is a welcome initiative.” Thanks to women's motivation, cutting across age, religion, caste and creed an unexpected number of couples reached the special camp to record their marriages, 

Sadar SDM Maniklal Das told that, In order to provide domestic as well as social security to women and to get quick legal and property rights-related benefits, such marriage registration is very essential. – "To provide domestic as well as social security to women and to get quick legal and property rights- related benefits, such marriage registration is very essential”- He further added.

Registration certificates were distributed by SDM, Sadar Maniklal Das, Managing Director, TSECL, Shyamal Kumar Roy, Technical Director, Mridul Kanti Chowdhury and General Secretary of the Employees Union, Shanti Debnath

The Supreme Court in the year 2006 ruled that all marriages, irrespective of their religion, be compulsorily registered and directed the central and state governments to frame and notify rules for this within three months. The apex court in its directive said that if any couple failed to register their marriage within 60 days from their wedding, they would be fined Rs 200. "Despite the Supreme Court directive and formulation of laws, on an average less than 10 per cent of the marriages were registered across the country.
