The North East Council had sanctioned Rs 1.33 crores in 2003 for setting up a modernized endocrilogy – diabetic – metabolic care unit at GBP hospital.
Under the scheme fund was allotted for procuring latest instruments, training of doctors and nurses etc. After receipt of fund, the department started with 13 bedded facilities started at super specialty block of the hospital. After few days government ordered to close down the department. All the procured equipments was shifted to other departments.
An eye department was opened in that place.Every day scores of diabetic patients are coming for treatment at GBP hospital. There are only three diabetic doctors in the state’s primer hospital, Dr. Sajal Debbarma, Dr. Ranjan Bhowmik and Dr. Sushanta Sen.
