Agartala, March 19 (TIWN): Each and every day security agencies seizes contraband cough syrup like – phensydyl, corex from across the state. But according to sources the seizure is just tip of the ice berg, smuggling is ten times more that seized.
The contraband cough syrup are coming from Delhi, Bihar and Assam smuggled into Bangladesh using Tripura as one of the safest corridor. They enters and crosses the border from the state illegally.
Few days back the seizure of three trucks loaded with phensydyl by BSF at Bodhjungnagar again raised the role of Churaibari checkpost located in Dharmanagar, North Tripura district. No vehicle can enter the state boundary without checking by the check post, surprisingly the phensydyl enters the state in trucks along with potato, onions and fruits.
A senior official of the check post said TIWN that every day 500 – 600 different types o fvehicles enter the state, it’s not possible to check each and every one due to shortage of manpower. The suspicious vehicles are only checked. It’s a open secret that a section of the staff of Churaibari check post are helping the smugglers in return they receives huge amount of kick backs. In the checkpost a X- ray machine was installed for checking the vehicles entering but they are sneaked into the state
After entering the state, they are unloaded from big turcks to smaller ones at Jirania and Bodhjungnagar. Then smuggled to Bangladesh through Sabroom, Sidhai, Boxanagar and Narsinghar .
The cough syrup, consumed in Bangladesh as an intoxicant, is priced at Rs 80 for a 100 ml bottle. Packed into cartons and pushed in Bangladesh , it fetches Rs1000 in that country. But now the trade is moving to cannabis. Rows and rows of ganja plants in Konabon, Devipur, Madhupur and Batodola (all in Tripura) are tended just for consumers in Bangladesh.
