AGARTALA, March 18 (TIWN): Awareness programme on “Police-Public Interface to Combat Crimes†organized by mankind awareness platform sponsored by Tripura Police Accountability Commission, Agartala was held at Bir Bikram Memorial College, here today.
Member of Tripura Police Accountability Commission Pranay Sahay inaugurated the programme and said that the Police Accountability Commission of Tripura launched a massive awareness programme for good and democratic policing, improvement of police-people relations and educating-people about their rights when they encounter police for lodging complaints, protection or immediate police action.
More importantly, the aim is to educate police & people about the laws conferring powers on police with well defined boundaries to ensure police functions within the limits of law. It has to be understood and accepted that police should be given professional freedom to work in accordance with law and their accountability should be only to the rule of law. While evaluating police performance the executive authority including police leadership should only see whether the police actions are in accordance with law, he mentioned.
He further said to ensure that professional freedom does not degenerate into misuse or abuse of powers alienating thereby people, police commission has been working hard for people’s vigil and closing police-people divide by bringing them in common platform for exchange of views in seminars and workshops.
Member of Tripura Police Accountability Commission Subinoy Chowdhury, Officer-in-Charge of East Agartala Police Station S, Basu Roy Choudhury and other dignitaries were present in the programme.
