BG conversion of Lumding – Silchar rail track complete

Agartala, March 10 (TIWN):Broad gauge conversion work is going on war footing at Silchar and by end of March rail engine would enter the station. A senior engineer of North East Froniter railway posted here told TIWN that conversion of 201 kilometer long track from Lumding to Silchar is complete, workers busy giving the final touch. The official informed on 16 March, a trial engine would enter Silchar station.

Asked about the current status of progress in BG conversion work in the Lumding-Agartala section,  said that the NFR authorities are expecting to complete BG conversion in Lumding-Silchar segment by March, 2016. The project is scheduled to be completed in Silchar-Agartala section within an additional six months, he added.

The Railways had  engaged  extra manpower from outside the region to augment the infrastructural and other logistic shortcoming for expedite the conversion work, the official said.

The BG conversion from Lumding to Silchar (120 km), which have  started from October 1, 2014 is expected to get completed by March 2016 while the second phase of BG conversion work from Silchar to Agartala will kick start on October 2015.

The rail service upto Agartala remain suspended from October 1 next due to undertaking of BG conversion work from Lumding to Silchar as declared by the NFR authority.

CPI(M) ruled Tripura government have been expressing dismay expressing dismay over Broad Gauge (BG) conversion  work. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar  had demanded to  undertake BG conversion work from Lumding to Agartala via Silchar at a time.
