NEW DELHI /AGARTALA, March 9 (TIWN): Today during Lok Sabha zero hour, Tripura MP Jiten Chaudhury raised a most important issue and dilapidated condition of Tripura's transport lifeline NH 44. Tripura MP stressed upon the importance of NH 44 from defence and economic prospective and said "road infrastructure in the North-East is very poor and undoubtedly the region is strategically very important from the defence as well as from the point of view of development of socio-economic infrastructure. In the North- East Tripura is totally a landlocked state and is linked to the rest of the country only with National Highway-44 and this road is the life line for the people of Tripura. However, the condition of this border road is very pathetic and is not unplayable in many stretches. With the start of Mega Block for conversion of Meter Gauge to Broad Gauge from Lumding to Silchar by the Railway Ministry the train movement to Tripura since October, 2014 has been discontinued leading to immense hardship to the people. Condition of National Highway-44 is worst from Ambassa in Tripura to Karimganj in Assam over a length of 164 km.

The Tripura portion of the road has been handed over to the state PWD by the Border Road Organization for maintenance but the committed funds are not being released by the Central Government.

Full Text of MP JIten Chaudhury's speech at Lok Sabha today:

Hon’ble Speaker, I rise here to raise a very important issue in this august House, which is related to the bread and breath of Tripura. As we all are aware of that road infrastructure in the North-East is very poor and undoubtedly the region is strategically very important from the defence as well as from the point of view of development of socio-economic infrastructure.
Madam, the condition of National Highway-44 is worst from Ambassa in Tripura to Karimganj in Assam over a length of 164 km. The Tripura portion of the road has been handed over to the state PWD by the Border Road Organization for maintenance but the committed funds are not being released by the Central Government.
This should be done immediately so that the road is maintained before the onset of monsoon.
Respected Madam Speaker, since Tripura is strategically located but during rainy season there are blockades of NH-44 for many days due to rains resulting in hardship to the people, it is therefore, necessary that residual portion of the alternate highway from Kukital to Subroom (it should run from Kukital-Kailashahar and Teliamura to Subroom via Amarpur- Karbook and Silacharri) is also declared as National highway in the national interest.
Madam, I would like to further request the Hon’ble Minister of Transport and Highways that work on National Highway-44A from Manu to Aizwal via Jampui Hills, the only hill station of Tripura, should also be expedited so that the people of the two states can commute easily and at the same time it opens an alternate linkages with the rest of the country. I hope the Union Government shall adhere to the 37 lakhs people of Tripura with early action on the ground.
