ICAR Tripura develops 16 new high yielding crop varieties : Major success in Agriculture Research

Agartala, March 3 (TIWN): Chief Minister Manik Sarkar inaugurated the function of ceremonial release of crop varieties developed by ICAR of Tripura on the 1st March at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre situated at Lembucherra, West Tripura.

A total of 16 new high yielding varieties of different crops covering paddy, mungbean, urdbean, sesamum, elephant foot yam, greater yam, pineapple and papya were released in this auspicious function in the presence of more than 500 people including state dignitaries, scientists, staff of ICAR and 400 farmers from different places of Tripura. Chief Minister inaugurated Plant Growth Chamber at this ICAR Campus for the production and growth of plants under controlled environment.

At the outset, the Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre, M. Datta welcomed all the dignitaries, scientists and farmers and narrated in brief the achievements of Tripura centre during last few years. He particularly acknowledged the cooperation of State Agriculture Department and allied Departments for execution of various activities of ICAR in Tripura. The Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Meghalaya, Dr. S. V. Ngachan addressed the huge gathering with a precise description of ICAR activities in operation across the region. Dy. Speaker of Tripura Legislative Assembly, Pabitra Kar appreciated the scientists and ICAR staff for bringing about different crop varieties for the farmers of Tripura. Dr. Arbinda Kumar, Senior Scientist of International Rice Research Institute, Manila, Phillippines described the success story of evolving new rice varieties at ICAR, Tripura Centre.  

CM Manik Sarkar congratulated the Director, Joint director, scientists and all staff of ICAR, Tripura centre for doing such wonderful job to develop and release of new varieties of different crops. Shri. Manik Sarkar assured to extend all sorts of help and cooperation for undertaking more and more research and developmental work at ICAR, Tripura centre. He encouraged the farmers for more and more involvement in agriculture and increasing the production, not only in agricultural crops, but also in animal husbandry and fisheries sectors. 

In this ceremonial release function, Shri. Dilip Das, Hon’ble  West Tripura District Sabhadhipati, Shri. Haricharan Sarkar, Hon’ble MLA, Bamutia Constituency, Tripura Legislative Assembly, Shri Khokan Debnath , Chairman of Bamutia Panchayt Samiti, West Tripura, Dr V. K. Bahuguna , Principal Secretary (Agriculture),  Dr B. Haldar, Pro-Vice Chancellor, ICFAI University, Tripura, Dr. D. P. Sarkar, Director (Agriculture), Shri. S. Das, Director, (Horticulture & Soil Conservation), Dr. D. Das, Director (ARDD) and other state officials and KVK Personnels  from 4 KVKs were present. In this programme, Dr. M. Sankaran , Senior Scientist, IIHR, Bangalore, Dr. Jai Prakash, Senior Scientist, IARI, New Delhi, Dr. K. Chattopadhya, Senior Scientist, CRRI, Cuttack also attended. All the Scientists, Technical Staff, Project Staff, Administrative Staff and TSM employees of ICAR actively participated and have made the function a grand success. The Demonstration of Technology was depicted through live materials and posters for all the delegates. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tripura and other dignitaries handed over different inputs (Paddy seeds, Mango saplings, Mushroom Spawn, Fish yearlings and Poultry birds) developed at ICAR among the farmers. In the meeting, it is expressed that there has been a strong linkage existed between ICAR and Govt. of Tripura and such close association is necessary to develop the agrarian economy of the region and Tripura in particular. The ceremonial release programme came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. S. P. Das, Senior Scientist and Plant Breeder of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre.
