National Food Security Mission implemented by Krishi Vigyan Kendra

Agartala, February 23 (TIWN): In an effort to promote SRI technology in paddy cultivation with HYV as well as hybrid, Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Divyodaya in West Tripura has been implementing National Food Security Mission (NFSM) in some selected villages since 2014.

For the greater benefit of farming community, some villages under Khowai, Teliamura, Kalyanpur, Tulasikhar, Mohanpur, Bishalgarh blocks have already been covered under NFSM while many such villages are likely to be covered soon.

National Food Security Mission (NFSM), a centrally sponsored scheme was launched in October 2007. The Mission is being continued during 12th Five Year Plan with new targets of additional production of food grains of 25 million tons of food grains comprising of 10 million tons rice, 8 million tons of wheat, 4 million tons of pulses and 3 million tons of coarse cereals by the end of 12th Five Year Plan.

The basic aim of the KVK is to promote SRI technology in paddy cultivation with HYV as well as hybrid, crop diversification and utilization of Kharif paddy land with the production of crops like lentil, maize, field pea through cluster demonstration approach under NFSM-Pulses, NFSM-Coarse cereals.

The KVK is also aiming to promote drought tolerant variety of paddy like Sahabhagi Dhan in the upland and Medium lands of West Tripura district for best handling of drought like situation. In the entire cluster demonstration programme, the KVK is promoting Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practice with judicious use of chemical fertilizer along with bio-fertilizer and organic manure. 

Due to continuous urbanization, farming lands are being decreased day by day. Therefore, to feed the entire population of the district as well as the state, the KVK of West Tripura in collaboration with Department of Agriculture is trying to utilize all the cultivable lands by increasing crops intensity and productivity with best natural resources.
