AGARTALA, February 20 (TIWN): Road traffic accidents—the leading cause of death by injury and the tenth-leading cause of all deaths globally—now make up a surprisingly significant portion here in Tripura. But this requires both the consciousness of police and public to create awareness.
Lack of parking place, poor awareness among locals and defunct signal posts have led to a spurt in accident related cases in the capital city Agartala and other parts here in Tripura. The town, which is expanding at a fast pace, has no parking space for vehicles. The locals face difficulty in commuting on busy thoroughfares as vehicles are parked on the roads leading to traffic congestion. Accidents are frequent on the road as traffic personnel use hand signals which are not clearly visible during night time. The pedestrians are also at risk of getting mowed down by speeding vehicles. The traffic and the police personnel are taking no step to keep a tab on the speed limits of vehicles other than staging a barricade at some parts of the city to nab the two-wheeler drivers who are not using helmets. Though Road Safety Week is observed every year, but it failed to create any effect on the reduction of accidents and loss of innumerable lives.
In a survey, the concerned departments have found not wearing ISI marked full helmet, rush and negligence driving and overloading are mainly causing maximum number of road accidents, an official said today. Despite several requests from the concerned department, a vast number of bike riders avoid wearing ISI marked full helmet and use to ride the bikes with two pillion riders, he said. In maximum number of cases, casualness of two-wheeler riders was found to be cause behind the road mishaps in the state. On the other hand, a section of bike riders and drivers of different vehicles raised their voice over the role of traffic police department. They alleged that a vast number of on duty traffic police personnel harass the public and use to take large amount fine in the name of road safety. Some of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) japans are deployed to carry out the responsibilities of traffic police, they added. In a recent data established in the Assembly shows that:
