Agartala, Feb 18 (TIWN): If you’ve been calling a thana (police station) and your call is not being received, chances are that the telephone at the thana is out of order. Months of unpaid phone bills by a number of thana’s across the state have accumulated so much so that the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has disconnected their telephone lines. This was stated by minister in charge of home department today at assembly.

According to the statement,  out of 71 thana’s, BSNL department snapped the connections of 19 thanas and one was defunct  since 2013 for technical defect.

Though all OCs have mobile phones, it is tough for the masses to get access to those numbers. And even if a citizen has an OC's mobile number, it may not be reachable or busy.
Many OCs put their cellphones on unreachable or busy modes on purpose, making it difficult for even their superiors to guess where they are actually placed.
"If we ask an OC to call us from a police station's basic landline number, he or she cannot trick us as we can verify the location. But, if basic phones are faulty, anyone can be fooled," said a senior  ranked officer who does not want to be identified.
"We need funds urgently," the senior official told TIWN. "Efforts are on to get them as soon as possible. Police headquarters has been informed. True, disconnected phones must be causing hardship to the masses."
