State to observe International Mother Language Day on Feb 21st

Agartala, February 17 (TIWN): International Mother Language Day will be observed at Agartala on February 21st...To mark this occasion, several programmes were undertaken by State Government to observe this day with proper honour and dignity. Every year, in the Akhaura border, both India and Bangladesh, observes this auspicious day. But this year, due to the turmoil in Bangladesh, the possibility would be counted less.

Besides, Agartala, Various programme will be also be organized at Various districts, quiz competition, drawing competition and sports programme will be included  as a part of this day. Every year, thousands of people - including children - from India and Bangladesh thronged the no man's land on the Indo-Bangla border at Akhaura near Agartala to observe international mother language day with a call to promote multi-cultural and multi-linguistic diversity all over the world with mutual respect and understanding.

The objectives include sensitizing people about the use of mother tongue for the nation's development and also impart proficiency in their respective mother tongues. Celebrating these days help in imparting national togetherness, and promote oneness in the nation. Celebration of an International Mother Language day in schools is predicted to help children grow with the values of their nation and understanding essentials of Indian culture. International Mother Language Day is an observance held annually on 21 February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It was first announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999. Its observance was also formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.

International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since 2000 February to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date represents the day in 1952when students from different educational institutions such as Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Dhaka Medical College demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bengali as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka (near High Court), which is the capital of present-day Bangladesh.
