AGARTALA, February 12 (TIWN): The state government is planning to strengthen the enforcement of law to provide full proof security to the endangered species, said forest minister Naresh Jamatia while replying to a question raised by MLA Samir Deb Sarkar at assembly session, here today.

A total of 8 cases were registered against smuggling of endangered species in the last three years the minister informed.

It is to be mentioned here that after the announcement of ban on selling tortoise and it's body parts, tortoises are still being sold at several local markets of the city namely M.G. Bazar, Battala, Lake Chowmuhani and Durga Chowmuhani.
According to sources, due to weak enforcement of law and non-cooperation from the civil societies the tortoise sellers are doing this.
In the year 2013 only one case was registered and in the year 2014 another case was registered against tortoise smugglers, the source added.
India represents one of Asia's most diverse turtles fauna and out of 26 available species of turtles and tortoises, 19 are found in NE alone but now they face an uncertain future due to indiscriminate hunting and killing for meat, the source mentioned.
The source added that more than 5000 turtles of five rare varieties had been killed and sold in different markets of the region over the years and now it had reached at the verge of extinction in Northeast.
The turtles and tortoises were also considered wild animals, which are morphologically unique and play an important role in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and fresh water turtles were known to be water purifiers and also used as biological control agents for livestock.
