AGARTALA, Sep 20 (TIWN): In a significant move against drug trafficking, the Sepahijala district Court has ordered the seizure of a convicted drug dealer's property to recover ?52,000. The convict, Shambhu Das, was sentenced to 10 years in prison under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for possessing narcotics.
Shambhu Das, resident of Rajib Colony in Kalitila area was arrested by police in the Ambassa area with narcotics. His property, located in a reserved forest area, poses a challenge for authorities to seize.
The court instructed the District Magistrate of Sepahijala to take action regarding the seizure. The District Magistrate then directed the Sub-Divisional Magistrate to investigate the matter. Deputy Collector and Magistrate Prasenjit Das was tasked with conducting the investigation.
Upon visiting Shambhu Das's residence, Prasenjit Das found that the property couldn't be seized due to its location in a reserved forest area. If the property were in a different area, it could have been sold to recover the amount.
Prasenjit Das emphasized the importance of NDPS cases in combating substance abuse. He noted that once someone is convicted under this act, it's challenging to escape the consequences. Shambhu Das will need to pay ?1 lakh to the court after serving his sentence.
In a similar case, authorities recovered ?50,000 from another convict, Babul Das, in the Ghaniamura area.
This incident highlights the government's efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and seize assets of those involved.
