From Cambridge to the Bench: Justice Rao's Journey to Tripura High Court

AGARTALA, July 22 (TIWN): Justice Mamidanna Satya Ratna Ramachandra Rao took oath as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court on Tuesday. Governor Indra Sena Reddy administered the oath at Raj Bhavan. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Minister Ratan Lal Nath, and other cabinet ministers were present on the occasion. Throughout his distinguished career, Rao has demonstrated exceptional judicial acumen and leadership.

Mamidanna Satyaratna Ramachandra Rao, a distinguished Indian jurist, was born on August 7, 1966, in Hyderabad. He pursued his law degree from Osmania University, graduating in 1989. After completing his LL.B., he was enrolled as an advocate on September 7, 1989. Rao's academic excellence earned him the Cambridge Commonwealth Scholarship and the Bank of Credit and Commerce International Scholarship, enabling him to secure an LL.M. from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1991.

Rao's illustrious career spans over three decades. He practiced law in various fields, including civil law, arbitration, company law, administrative and constitutional law, labor, and service law. His expertise and dedication led to his elevation as an Additional Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 29, 2012. He was made permanent on December 4, 2013. Rao's judicial career progressed rapidly, and he took over as Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on August 31, 2021.

Rao's tenure as a judge has seen him serve in various high courts. He was transferred as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on October 5, 2021, and took oath on October 12, 2021. Subsequently, he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and took oath on May 30, 2023. Later, he was transferred as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, taking oath on September 25, 2024. Most recently, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his transfer to the Tripura High Court as Chief Justice, and he took oath on July 22, 2025.
