Agartala, June 29 (TIWN): A 60-year-old inmate, Kailash Roy, died under mysterious circumstances at the Central Jail in Bishalgarh, Tripura, sparking widespread outrage. Roy, a resident of Agartala's Khejurbagan area, was serving a sentence for his involvement in a case related to a fight that resulted in death.
According to reports, Roy was rushed to Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors. However, his family alleges that he was subjected to torture in the jail, which led to his death. The family demanded that the authorities hand over Roy's body to them in the same condition as he was taken to the jail, but after a prolonged wait at the hospital, they refused to take the body, leading to it being taken to Agartala's GBP Hospital morgue by the Bishalgarh police.
The incident has sparked tension, with the family demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Roy's death. This is not the first instance of custodial death in Tripura, as a similar case was reported in 2022, where the Tripura High Court ordered the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family members of a 27-year-old victim who allegedly died due to custodial torture.
The family of the deceased has alleged foul play, and with growing public concern over jail security and functioning, this incident demands an immediate and impartial investigation to bring justice to the victim's family.
