Agartala, June 28 (TIWN): Residents of the 35 Mile area near Atharamura Hill under Mungiakami RD Block in Tripura staged a protest by blocking the Assam-Agartala National Highway on Saturday. The villagers demanded a permanent solution to their acute drinking water crisis, which has been ongoing for over a month.
According to locals, a pipeline supplying drinking water was damaged about a month and a half ago when rocks fell on it from the hill above. Despite repeated requests to the authorities to repair the pipeline, no action was taken.
The situation became so dire that the villagers were left with no choice but to block the national highway. Many families have been forced to collect water from distant sources, including forests and streams, just to meet their basic needs. The blockade caused significant disruptions, but was lifted after the administration assured the villagers that the pipeline would be repaired quickly.
However, the villagers have warned that they will launch a larger movement if their demands are not met. They emphasized that access to clean drinking water is not just a matter of convenience, but a matter of survival for their community. The villagers are adamant that the repair of the pipeline is essential to restore normalcy in their lives ¹.
It's worth noting that Mungiakami RD Block has been in the news for other development projects, including the installation of solar-powered microgrids to provide electricity to remote villages in the area. The block has also seen visits from high-ranking officials, such as the District Magistrate of Khowai, who have inspected various areas under the block's jurisdiction.
