AGARTALA, June 28 (TIWN): “With the swelling number of computers and connectivity, your mobile phones have also now emerged as computers, resulting in a spike in cyber crimes. Technology is changing every day, and with this, the criminals are taking advantage. They find flaws and utilize these flaws to commit crimes,” said Anurag Dhankar, Tripura Director General of Police, at the Cyber Crime police station inauguration program at AD Nagar Crime Branch Office.

“On this ground, the chief minister has directed us to modernize the policing, and this Cyber Police station’s inauguration is a part of this.” The police chief blamed human greed, which is making them toys for cyber criminals.

“Tripura police have achieved a milestone in controlling physical crimes that include NDPS, crimes against women, crimes against property, etc,” said DGP.

“We were successful in reducing 20% crime rates in 2024 in comparison with 2023 crime rates, and this year further 10% decrease in crime rates was reported. It is happening because we are taking various preventive measures to control crimes. If any crime happens, we are ensuring justice to the victims, and making sure that the innocent people are acquitted,” he said.

“What is cybercrime?” said the DGP, shifting his focus from physical crime to digital crime. “Cybercrime is basically where the criminal uses a computer to commit the crime, or the computer itself is the target of the criminal. Now your mobile phone is also considered a computer!”

The DGP cited an example of how a Jawaharlal Nehru Medical Research Institute’s retired Director in Pondicherry fell prey to a Rs. 2 crore cyber fraud. It happened after the cyber criminal gained his trust by keeping promises of high-interest returns against small amounts, and after weeks, he lost his money, and the person who represented the company disappeared.

“What I am trying to say, even educated people are becoming victims of such crimes. The cause is nothing but our greed. Greed makes us toys in criminals’ hands. Greed compels us to pay our money to get more money,” the DGP said.

DGP further cited an example from Tripura where a showroom company lost Rs. 2.3 crores and in Bishalgarh, a doctor who lost Rs. 90 lakhs.
