Ganja plants (cannabis) worth Rs 11.34 crore destroyed

Agartala, Feb 9 (TIWN):Cultivation of illegal ganja plants ( cannabis) has become an ‘alarming problem’ in the state. In 2014, security agencies have destroyed 12,10,925 ganja plants of Rs 11.34 crore, this was stated in assembly today by chief minister Manik Sarkar, who holds the home department.

It was stated maximum ganja plants was destroyed under Bishalgarh police station (287 acre), Melaghar police station (115 acre)Sonamra police station ( 203 acre) and Kalamchaura (128 acre) were destroyed. 

A senior official of enforcement requesting anonymity said most of the ganja  is grown in the bordering areas of Indo – Bangla border like Sonamura, outskirts of Agartala.
He said the cultivators even use power-tillers, fertilizers and irrigation facilities, resulting in high yielding bushes.  
It is smuggle it to Bangladesh through the porous international border to earn a fast buck. “There is a huge demand for ganja in Bangladesh, and Tripura plays a key role in meeting this demand,” he said
The ganja cultivation was mainly carried out in the hilly and inaccessible terrains in  the  state and a lot of co-ordination was needed among various departments to destroy the hemp cultivation.
